The mandate

Our team was engaged by a Fortune 500 semiconductor company to build a cloud-based IoT platform to support a new chipset designed for mass-produced appliances. Alongside the hardware, the goal was to deliver a scalable service capable of managing and extracting value from data generated by millions of connected devices.

What we built

From proof of concept to production platform, until they built a team around it

  1. Platform Architecture on AWS IoT Core

We architected the platform on AWS IoT Core from the ground up — designing for the scale and reliability requirements of a chipset destined for mass-produced consumer appliances. The architecture balanced device-side constraints with cloud-side operational demands across a large and growing fleet.

    • Cloud Architecture
  2. Secure Device Registration

We implemented secure device provisioning and registration flows, ensuring that each device in the field could be authenticated and enrolled into the platform reliably — a foundational requirement for a system operating at consumer electronics scale.

    • Device Provisioning
    • mTLS
  3. Device Shadow & Configuration Management

Configuration management was implemented through AWS IoT Device Shadows, enabling the platform to maintain the desired and reported state of every connected device — and to push configuration updates reliably even when devices are intermittently offline.

    • Device Shadows
    • State Synchronisation
  4. Large-Scale Telemetry Ingestion

The platform was designed to ingest and process high-volume telemetry streams from millions of devices in the field. We built the ingestion pipeline to handle sustained throughput while remaining cost-efficient — a meaningful engineering challenge at consumer appliance scale.

    • Telemetry Pipelines
    • Stream Processing
  5. APIs for Downstream Applications

The system exposed robust APIs enabling downstream applications and services to access and act on device data in real time — giving the client's product teams a well-defined interface to build consumer-facing features on top of the platform.

    • REST APIs
    • Real-Time Data Access
  6. Scale Testing & Iterative Enhancements

As the platform matured from proof of concept toward production readiness, we conducted extensive scale testing to validate behaviour under realistic fleet conditions. Each round of testing informed iterative enhancements — tightening the gap between projected and real-world performance.

    • Load Testing
    • Performance Tuning
  7. Team Transition & Knowledge Transfer

As the platform reached maturity, we worked closely with the client to transition ownership to their internal engineering team. The handover was managed to ensure continuity — covering architecture, operational practices, and the accumulated knowledge built up over two years of iterative development.
